When I stopped doing Amazon recs in August 2024, I knew I wanted to replace that content with something that still scratched the same itch as all the regular Gee Thanks! shopping content: finding great and weird stuff, talking about why it’s great, helping you shop smarter, and hopefully saving you some money along the way. Thrifting has become that for me. What started as a passive hobby in 2016 has become a very active one. I go 2–3 times a week, I take tons of photos, and I have accumulated a great wealth information about what is worth grabbing, what I leave behind, and how (and where!) to find the good stuff without spending six hours digging through racks.

But I’m talking about the aisles of Target, Walmart, Five Below, Marshalls, HomeGoods, H&M Home, and Zara Home. And listen, I like a lot of it! This is not me standing outside of HomeGoods with a picket sign that says YOU SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT THAT LAMP IN 1976; LOSER ENERGY!!!!

But there is now an entire category of brand-new STUFF whose main job is to look as though it has already lived a life. A mass-produced floral tray that looks like it came out of somebody’s grandmother’s kitchen, or like, a wicker basket that almost looks like it’s going to fall apart, sitting on a shelf of other wicker baskets that almost look like they’re going to fall apart in the same exact way (dystopian! Truly!).

Big-box stores have gotten extremely good at selling us the aesthetic of age. Which is insane because the old stuff STILL EXISTS! AND IT WAS MADE BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TO LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO IT’S STILL AROUND!!!! FOR YOU TO FIND!!!!!!!!!!! AND PUT IN YOUR HOUSE!!!!!

This is one of the things I have started noticing more and more as I thrift multiple times a week: a lot of what we call a “home decor trend” is really retail rediscovering objects that have cycled out a few generations just sitting in basements and attics waiting for the algorithm to decide we wanted them again. And often, the new reproduction is not even cheaper even though it’s made cheaper.

So if the thing you like about something at World Market is specifically that it looks old, I think there is one additional step worth taking before you buy it new:

See if you can find the actual old thing.

You can obviously do this IRL at Goodwill, Savers, estate sales, etc., but the internet has one enormous advantage: you can get reallllll specific.

The trick is knowing what to type, because it is not “vintage cottage core floral tray.” The more current trend words you put into your search, the more likely you are to end up shopping from someone who knows exactly why you’re there and has priced accordingly. The more likely it is you buy junk.

Here is where I vintage shop online, and the exact search terms I’ve been using lately.

Let’s get into ten sites I am scouring when I can’t go shopping IRL. (Also! The more curated a site the more likely the prices are to reflect that. But remember, you can always just use what you find online to make your treasure list of what you’ll be searching for next time you pop into Goodwill or Savers.)

• HiBid — probably the closest thing to a giant network of local auction houses online. You can find antiques, housewares, furniture, pottery, glass, baskets, lamps, etc., and the photography/titles are often gloriously bad. That can work in your favor.

• eBay — my first stop, always! I love to lowball on eBay. Out of all of these, this and Facebook Marketplace are the best places for lowball success.

• EstateSales.net — very good for actual estate sale inventory, both local sales and online marketplace/auction listings. You can also track down estate sales in your area (they are usually on the weekends). Hot tip: download the app!

I go to thrift stores multiple times a week. Sometimes I buy nothing. Sometimes I somehow leave with a 100-year-old chair, a portrait of two strangers and a giant marble head of the Virgin Mary. Such is life.

But because I do this so often, I’ve realized I have a mental list of categories I check almost every single time. Not because I automatically buy them, and not because they’re necessarily “valuable,” but because I’ve learned that these are the places where I personally find the best stuff.

This is also why I don’t really believe in walking into a thrift store with an extremely specific shopping list. I’m not usually thinking, “Today I need a vase.” I’m looking for the kinds of things I know are worth stopping for, and then deciding whether the particular thing in front of me deserves to come home.

You can apply the lessons here for any of these categories:

I am talking about the Samantha poster. Vintage teddy bears. Old Pleasant Company. Wooden toys. Doll furniture. Illustrated children’s books. Puzzles. Old school supplies. Anything that makes some deeply dormant part of my brain go OH MY GOD.

This is NOT necessarily the same thing as buying collectibles because I do not know what every American Girl item is worth. I am not trying to become an expert in 1988 Fisher-Price. I don’t necessarily care if something has its box or is in brand new condition.

I just think nostalgia is one of the few categories where you know almost instantly whether something is special to you, specifically. You either see it and feel absolutely nothing or suddenly you are nine years old again.

And when the latter happens, I stop. This is also a crucial time to deploy the big question from this post; the one I didn’t ask myself for years and years but that now saves me tons of money and space. It’s the difference between finding, like, a Molly American Girl Doll and one of those abacuses from the doctor’s office. And it may be the opposite for you! But I always look and check. Sometimes the dopamine hit is just enough.

Anything from a museum, hotel, restaurant or other institution

THIS is such a good one.

Museum gift-shop objects. Hotel ashtrays. Old restaurant plates. Glasses with logos. Club silverware. Commemorative objects. Things from universities, resorts, department stores, historic houses, random societies I have never heard of. Basically: if the object has evidence that it originally came from SOMEWHERE, I want to know more.

My giant Virgin Mary head is obviously the best recent example. Finding an authorized Met and Vatican Museums reproduction of Michelangelo’s Pietà at a thrift store is exactly why I thrift.

Did I wake up that morning needing a giant head of the Virgin Mary? No. Did I know such a thing was even available for purchase? Also no.

But suddenly there she was!

Art (especially if it’s signed)

I will always stop for art, or better yet, signed art. I do not care if I recognize the artist, and most of the time I absolutely do not. If there is a signature, a number, a date, or anything else that tells me this was made by an actual person and not mass-produced for HomeGoods, I am looking closer.

One of my friends has made hundreds of dollars reselling the most RANDOM signed and numbered prints on Facebook Marketplace, which really changed how I look at this category. I am not saying every signed piece is valuable, because obviously it is not, but it gives me a reason to investigate. And even if the art itself ends up being worth nothing, sometimes the frame alone is worth more than the $4.99 they are asking for the whole thing.

This is where we get into the stuff I check so automatically at this point that I barely realize I’m doing it: the fabric-content tag that can make me completely reconsider something I was about to walk past, the $3–$7 thing I basically never buy new anymore because thrift stores are full of them, the section that led me to a 100+ year-old chair for $7, and the category I’m quietly stockpiling for all of the dinner parties I plan to host in the house I still do not own.

Plus: the one entire section of the thrift store I almost always skip, even though I KNOW people regularly find things worth hundreds of dollars there.

Even though we’re in the middle of August, I am starting to feel the crunch and the chill on the horizon. I hear the Gilmore Girls theme song. I taste a PSL. While I’m not totally ready to swap swimsuits for sweaters (the winter feels too recent, and it was cold and bad), all of the ~New Arrivals~ have hit the shoppes, and I have been browsing. I am who I am!

Here’s what I have added to my long Notes App list called “I want it!” this week.

This Damsen Madder trench. What makes it feel classic instead of trendy is really the shape. It’s not cropped, super fitted, aggressively oversized, or doing anything that’s going to make me look at it in three years and associate it with Fall 2026. It’s just a really good, long, roomy coat with a great collar and a belt to tie when you want a little shape. This silhouette has basically been around forever for a reason!!

Salad plates by Mora. I have had a very extreme craving to overhaul my plates and dishes. While I love the idea of getting a set of China from the thrift store, I am a little nervous about daily eating off of wares that are led-ridden (and according to my TikTok doomscrolling it’s basically all of them). I’ve been drawn to these ceramics from Mora for the colors and the price.

These culottes from ShopZuri. Small, woman-owned brand making big pants in big prints. NEED I SAY MORE? This is my jam. I don’t know if I would wear a matching set, but the pants are a yes for me. Check out all of the prints; they have so many!

This dress from Tuckernuck. It’s so cute and I would look cute in it. Do I need any other reasons to buy it? Come ON!

Hi Geezers,

I am currently spending my second summer upstate and having the time of my life. This has been sort of a trial period for figuring out whether I want to buy a weekend house up here, and I am leaning… yes, I do. So naturally, to manifest this, I have been thrifting for a home I don’t yet own. SO. July was a month when I spent a lot of time exploring new-to-me stores on Long Island, but perhaps most importantly, I mapped out every Goodwill and Savers along the route from Brooklyn to my cousin’s wedding in Northeast Massachusetts and stopped at every single one, turning what should have been a three-hour drive into a 10-hour trek.

Today, I’m showing you everything I bought in July, why I bought it and what I paid for each thing.

A $12.50 horse and carriage ride back to the 90s

Let’s begin with the fan favorite from Instagram, which I found upstate at the bestttt and most inexpensive store (more on that store below): a framed 1990s Pleasant Company poster of American Girl doll Samantha for $12.50. I was more of a Molly girl myself, but I couldn’t resist. Yes, I always go through my 10PC, but this one really falls into the category of the vintage LL Bean Advent Calendar; I could not leave it behind. I could see hanging it in my upstate bathroom (you know, in the house I don’t own yet), or in my office.

A $5 cookie jar from the 1960s

Next was something that had been on my list: a pretty vessel for my Grüns. I had been looking for a long time. It needed to be big enough to fit at least 20 packs, and it had to have a lid. I finally found this gorgeous vintage Anchor Hocking Wexford cookie jar for $5 at a 2A Thrift. Jars like this were produced in the ’60s and ’70s, and I got lucky and spotted it on a cart they were pushing out to the shelves. I snagged it before anyone else saw it. It can fit 30 packs of Grüns! BTW, everyone around me was sick over the last week — including kids — and I am fine :)

Here’s something I left behind

This E.O. Brody candy dish for $4.50. Why did I leave it behind? I already have a lot of glassware (like, a lot), in my storage unit and in my parents’ basement. I didn’t have an immediate use for it, and I didn’t love it enough to say, F IT, I NEED IT. This is something I would have bought no questions asked just a few years ago but I have refined my process and now am comfortable leaving some stuff behind for others to find and love. I am sure this went fast.

Behind the paywall: the $7 find I absolutely did not need but could not leave behind once I realized what it could be worth and the big mistake the store was making that helped me find it for so cheap, and the $50 thing I almost passed up before I realized I’d never come across it again. Plus, the ugliest thing I saw all month.

I wanted to remind you all that this is prime time to buy summer clothes. Why? Because all the post-July 4th marketing is about back-to-school, Halloween, and SWEATERS, so a lot of brands are hosting their “end-of-season” sales in July (this is true of every season; it is just the most obvious this time of year). Whenever someone finds out I thrift a lot, they inevitably ask me the same question: “What brands should I be looking for?”

It's a fair question. It seems like people who find amazing things every weekend must have memorized thousands of labels, but truuuuuly, I haven't. Sure, there are brands that make me stop in my tracks, but they're not actually what I'm looking for. (Though I'm certainly not going to say no to something like this...)

In fact, some of my favorite thrift finds have come from brands I’d never heard of before, and that’s because I don’t think the label is the most important piece of information.

Once you know what questions to ask yourself in the thrift store, you'll start noticing pieces everyone else walks right past.

Today, I’m going to walk you through my 10-point purchase checklist that I run through before anything goes into my cart. The 10PC (yes, I gave it a name) helps me figure out whether something is actually worth buying for myself before the label even enters the conversation.

One of these 10 points has probably saved me more money than all the others combined, and it took me YEARS to learn it. I genuinely wish someone had told me this when I started thrifting; I would have a lot fewer thrift store “treasures” sitting in bins in my apartment.

I love thrifting, but I COMPLETELY, totally understand why you might walk into a thrift store, look around for three minutes and pivot turn right back out the door.

Let’s say you’re in your basic Goodwill. The sizing and organization is chaotic. The lighting is hostile. You have to look through 400 polyester blouses to find one perfect cotton button-down, and somebody has usually abandoned a toaster in the shoe department. And it’s sticky. And there are crumbs in it. Everything smells weird.

YET...there are tons of valuable things hiding at the thrift store. Actually, many of them aren’t hiding at all. Most people just don’t know what to look for. For this series, valuable usually means something well-made, useful, or exciting that costs much less than it should.

I have a method, and in this issue I am giving you an exact exercise you can try today.

I can’t promise you’ll uncover authentic Picasso plates for $6 or find a $350,000 basketball jersey for $4 (this was just last week). BUT ALSO, YOU MIGHT!

Give me a little time, and I can promise that if something like that is eventually sitting in your thrift store, you’ll know how to find it because you’ll know what to look for.

Because while I haven’t found anything destined for auction at Christie’s, I have scored plenty of expensive, interesting, and valuable-to-me, things: a Clare V. Moyen bag for $19.99, a vintage brass fireplace stand for $12, authentic Hermès shoes for $4.99 in 2020 at the Savers in Santa Fe (that will be its own chapter of this series; best find ever), and more $10 leather jackets and $3 mid-century modern glassware than I care to admit to buying.

I can promise you that I was not blessed with a special gene that allows me to identify cashmere from 40 feet away. I just have a system, built from ten years of practice, trial and error, and a few stooooopid mistakes behind me.

This series is going to teach you my system one step at a time: how to identify quality, inspect clothing and accessories, use labels and sold listings, avoid expensive mistakes, and eventually find the good stuff before someone else does.

Let’s start with the biggest mistake new thrifters make.

Most people walk into a thrift store and try to shop the entire thing. They wander through every department, become overwhelmed, and leave convinced that they are simply bad at thrifting.

My first rule is…don’t do that. Do the exact opposite.
