Ep 215: The influencer who finally wore me down

She got me to buy a tv...on wheels.

Hi Geezers,

A few weeks ago I pulled the trigger on something I’ve been looking at for months and never told you about. It all started when I came across one of my favorite Instagram bunnies in one of my favorite Instagram rabbit holes —more on her in a sec — showcasing this item in several of her high-quality, perfectly produced, makes-me-feel-inadequate-when-I-watch-them-but-I-can’t-stop-watching-them reels.

The item was priced at $1000; too high for an impulse purchase. I sat on it through the fall and even though Black Friday, when the price dropped down to $896. 2025 came, and the price shot back up to $1000, and I kept my urge to buy it at bay through the slow, dark trudge through January. February arrived, February ended.

And then it was March, and the price dipped back down again to the $800s and I was still thinking about it — the LG StanByMe. And I thought anything I’ve been thinking about buying for nearly 6 months is something I really want.

So I bought it (I got the 27” version; most influencers talking about it get a bigger version).

For some reason, buying a TV that mounts on the wall or sits on a console doesn't strike me as nearly as ridiculous as spending the same amount on one that rolls around your house on wheels. And yet, I was immediately drawn to the idea of a rolling TV—mainly because my bedroom layout makes it nearly impossible to mount a television or place one on a proper piece of furniture. As much as I love my apartment, it does have a few odd architectural quirks.

Growing up in a household where TV time was limited, it’s probably no surprise that I’ve become the kind of adult who loves having the TV on all day—not to watch it, but just for the comforting background noise. For a while, I told myself I didn’t have a TV in the bedroom on purpose—that it was a “sanctuary” for sleep and reading, free from distractions. But honestly, that was total bullshit. I yearned for a tv in my room! Never mind that I have one in my living room, and in my office!

Just a reminder that Gee Thanks! has significantly stepped back from using Amazon links—and becoming a premium Substack subscriber is one of the best ways to help us keep going without relying on a monthly check from Jeff Bezos.

When you subscribe today, you'll unlock the rest of this post (including the reveal of my favorite Instagram rabbit hole and the accounts I’ve discovered while falling into it), plus a full episode with Sal all about my TV on wheels. You’ll also get access to our full back catalog of Gee Thanks! episodes released here since we relaunched in September 2024—there are 23 so far!—along with exclusive content like the Eyeing, Buying, Trying series, all of my Shop My Suitcase posts and more. Once in awhile, paid subscribers also get exclusive codes to brands we all love, like Hotel Lobby Candle, Hyer Goods, CurrentBody, and Medik8!

Most importantly, your support helps us continue offering all the free stuff—like our Facebook group, our Black Friday shopping hub, and our Instagram—without putting it behind a paywall. It’s a small way to make a big difference in keeping this community going, and I appreciate it so much!

Now, let’s get to that Instagram account that influenced ME on the LG StanByMe. I am mesmerized and hypnotized by her content, and yet her face appears in almost none of it. I even tried to figure out how much she makes a year (the conservative estimate will make your jaw drop).

I know almost nothing about her.

But I can’t stop watching.
