It's snowing out, but winter is over

Sales calendars perplex, unless you can play the game. I'm here to help.

It's February 12, and in the retail world, that means only one thing: winter is over. That's right—it's not even halfway through the month, and barely two weeks have passed since the groundhog saw his shadow, yet the sales calendars have already declared that spring is on its way. Never mind the snow on the ground—or the snow still in the forecast for the next week if you're in New York like me.

But let’s be honest—we still have plenty of time before the blossoms appear and before we can swap our hats and scarves for lightweight outerwear. According to my photos from 2024, I was wearing my wool coat through the end of April, only consistently switching to a trench in the second week of May. In the words of Steve Martin, “not so fast, George Banks.”

Here’s what I recommend buying during the “end of season” sales that go through the upcoming holiday weekend.

This one is a big old duh, but the prices on winter coats do not disappoint. Right now my favorite midi-length puffer coat is on sale for up to 50% off. I have worn it every single day for 2 weeks, and it’s kept me super warm on dog walks. If you live in a climate that generally does not drop below 30 degrees farenheit, do NOT buy this coat. It is simply going to be too warm.

Size up one to accommodate for bulkier clothing underneath like sweaters.

If you are looking for a shorter puffer, I love this one from Sam Edelman, currently 55% off on Nordstrom (Nordstrom currently has a lot of great winter jacket deals). Definitely size up in this one if you are planning on wearing it with anything other than a lightweight tee underneath.

Sorel’s 40% off end-of-season sale is kicking off today—coming in hot (or cold… or hot?). The sale features deals on boots that less savvy shoppers paid full price for back in November, even though the worst of the winter weather didn’t hit until after the holidays.

Since this is a highly-anticipated sale, sizes go quickly.
