Hi Geezers!
Remember a week or two ago when I sent that email about wanting to incorporate my favorite hobby — thrifting — into the Gee Thanks! universe?
Well I realized I didn’t have to have a fully-cooked ~business plan~ in order to bring my finds to you and make them shoppable.
Or to just have fun.
TO JUST HAVE FUN…is supposed to be the point! On New Year’s Eve, Nora’s family and I sit and talk about what we want from the year ahead. In 2023 going into 2024 I said I wanted to spend less time crying and more time laughing (and I did!). In 2024 going into 2025 I said I wanted to have more fun and more creativity in my life—in whatever form it finds me or I find it.
So here we are. In terms of doing something with my thrifting addiction, I just had to have an idea and the guts to go for it. So I just sucked in my breath and just did it. I simply siloed the thrifted side of Gee Thanks! shopping to its own Instagram account — shout out to the 1k Geezers who already follow me @ ThriftedxGeeThanks !
Here’s how it works:
Right now, it is a FUN HOBBY, where I do “dopamine drops” of some of my finds on Sundays, you bid on them and the winners get DM’d the next day, Monday, at 3pm EST. Right now there’s a vintage glass strawberry dish from the 80s, a milk glass candy dish from the 60s, and a Quimper heart plate from France available to bid on. There’s also going to be one “blind bid” per Sunday, and that only happens on stories.
I love Gee Thanks! (and I love shopping). But also, Gee Thanks! is my job. But also, I love my job! But also, I haven’t had a fun hobby since I started Gee Thanks! in 2019 — as a hobby. So I am feeling all kinds of excited about doing something shopping-adjacent that feels like a new spark in my belly, while also still doing the job I love as my job. Secondhand shopping is also something Nora and I love doing together as friends, and then we get to talk about it together.
Hence, today’s episode! (PS: Sal will return next week — they are back from a 4-week trip and I missed them so much!)
And maybe most importantly, my parents are excited that 5 years worth of thrift store, estate sale, and auction finds are leaving their basement and coming back to Brooklyn with me (and then going to your homes!).
Thank you, mom and dad! As the saying goes, having a basement means you never have to say goodbye to your adult children.
Before I go, I want to remind you today’s the last day that code MOSS20 will work at Anthropologie.
The one thing that everyone is buying up — these Rothy’s boots that appeared as one of my favorite things on the Serena and Caroline Favorite Things Holiday Live Show back in November. These boots are the most comfortable boots and I have logged dozens of miles throughout multiple cities. I sized up from a 10.5 to an 11 and I am very happy.
