The MVPs of my Suitcase:
Let’s begin with the most unexpected choice: the Rothy’s Classic Boot in Tobacco.
While packing these heeled boots, I had a nagging feeling it might be a mistake. You see, I often pack for the aspirational version of myself—the one who effortlessly glides through European streets looking chic—rather than the real me, who ends up regretting the lack of practical athleisure options. This tendency has left me in foreign towns before, overstocked on dresses and underprepared for the actual demands of travel. So, as I tucked not one but two pairs of heeled brown boots into my suitcase, I was pretty sure I was setting myself up for the same fate.
By day two of the trip, I decided to test my resolve. Out came the Rothy’s, fresh from the box, for their very first outing, a couple of hours walking through Paris’ third arrondissement. Was this a wise move? There are many smarter choices than breaking in a brand-new pair of heeled boots on a walking-intensive vacation. But, alas, wisdom wasn’t the guiding force here! It almost never is.
To my absolute surprise, these boots were immediately comfortable. They offered solid arch support and felt great for walking right out of the box. Thanks to the knit merino wool construction, the boots are stretchy and flexible, eliminating the need for a break-in period. The toe box was comfortable from the start, with no pinching or stiffness to work through.
I wore them, and then I kept wearing them—covering about 6.5 miles during my adventures in both Paris and London. For sizing reference, I’m usually a 10.5, and the 10.5 fit perfectly for me, even though many reviews noted the boots tend to run large. That’s definitely something to consider when ordering. ($229, Rothy’s but open this link, copy, text to yourself, and return on Black Friday. Or just keep up with The Holiday Shop Hub! My guess is you’ll be able to get at least 20% off!)
